The New Word For Luxury is Ram
The New Word For Luxury is Ram
The Ram 1500 has beat BMW and Mercedes for the top luxury spot and was named Cars.com’s Top Luxury Car of the Year. Not only did Ram beat out the typical European luxury shoe-ins, plus all the other automakers, but this was actually the first time a truck has ever been in discussion for the luxury spot.
“It’s really kind of astounding, but if you’ve been in these trims and in this truck, you may not be that surprised that it won,” Jenni Newman, Cars.com’s editor-in-chief, said. “This truck really blew us away.”
Automakers have been making luxury trucks a priority in recent years by adding premium extras like massaging seats, premium leather, 12-inch navigation screen, wood trim, panoramic sunroof and more, but along with a surge in luxury features comes a surge in pricing. For example, the $100,000 F-450 Super Duty Limited pick up that was on the market a few years ago.
Right now, Ram has a 1500 Laramie Longhorn Crew Cab 4×2 starting at just $53,890 and a Limited Crew Cab 4×2 starting at $53,465. However, according to Newman, determining the luxury car winner is about value, and purchasing extras or premium packages can add up quickly when looking for a luxury truck.
So… what makes these Ram truck trims so special that it allowed them to beat the new 2020 BMW X7 and the Mercedes-Benz S-Class?
“It’s a luxurious leather that’s used. It’s the genuine wood trim that you see around the cabin. It’s the beautiful color combinations that you normally wouldn’t see in your everyday car,” Newman said.
Ram even went above the usual luxury by creating a feeling of rarity to the Laramie Longhorn Edition by adding a branding iron mark on the wood-trimmed upper glove box door.
But it’s not just the aesthetics that projected Ram into the luxury car category, a major reason behind Cars.com giving Ram the Luxury Car of the Year award was the multimedia system.
“It’s this really impressive, 12-inch-tall system that allows you to display two different inputs,” said Newman. “Ram has really set the bar.” He noted that it would be interesting to see how GM and Ford respond to Ram upping their multimedia game the next time they redesign their trucks.
“This award validates Ram’s unrelenting efforts to deliver more comfort, refinement and value to our customers. The Ram 1500 Longhorn and Limited are examples of how we deliver the most luxurious pickups in the industry,” Reid Bigland, head of the Ram brand for Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, said in a news release.
The Luxury Car of the Year award has definitely given Ram the opportunity to brag a bit and will, in the end, help solidify Ram’s hold on the No. 2 U.S. sales slot, just ahead of the Chevy Silverado.
